Engineering Assistant, Field Checker

Under the supervision of the Senior Design Engineer in an Engineering office or reporting to the District Manager in locations where there is no Engineering office, this position will assist the field engineering team with collecting site information for capital additions.

Responsibilities and Duties:
•Review requisition, ballpark scope, and planning specification.
•Research job site and where AE’s system is located utilizing map systems.
•Review with Design Lead to determine possible route options and preliminary design.
•Research what required land approvals that will be required (easements, pipeline crossings) using available tools.
•Review jobs with Designated Community Leads when consultation with Aboriginal communities is required.
•Complete office portion of environmental field report data for work on crown land.
•Contact customer to set up site visit appointment.
•Work with Design Lead to identify special resources that may be required to properly complete field check (i.e. helicopters, survey, land agents, etc).
•Meet with the customer to review their requirements on site.
•Review preliminary design and ensure it fits with site conditions.
•Determine property boundaries by identifying property pins.
•Operate GPS tools and applicable software to provide route profile data.
•Complete the field portion of the HAZCOM requirements.
•Commit to project schedules, review project schedules and communicate status to project leads.
•Participate in project team meetings.
•Complete job plan and tailboards, identify appropriate safety equipment to complete work, identify site hazards on field check.

Required Qualifications
•Grade 12 high school diploma; Technical Diploma, Trade or Apprenticeship Certificate from NAIT or SAIT.
•Four (4) years or more related experience as an EA in an electrical utility environment with required knowledge in Construction, Survey or Design would be an asset.
•Ability to use drafting software packages or willingness to learn.
•Fundamental knowledge distribution project process, distribution standards, and construction methods.
•Mainframe and PC computer skills.
•Highly organized with the ability to successfully manage several projects simultaneously and accurately document information.
•Proven self starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
•Strong written and verbal communication skills.
•Good team player with strong interpersonal skills.
•Driver’s licence - Class 5.

**Lesser qualifications may be considered for this position.
**Ability to travel to complete site visits and ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions is required. Overnight stays may be required at various locations.
